REPORT
As part of our set goals and objectives. this year, we are offering financial support to ten (10) brilliant but extremely less privileged students in some Senior Secondary Schools within Mainland, Lagos State.
In carrying out the exercise we approached the LG Education District IV in charge of Apapa, Mainland, and Surulere for advice. We subsequently had a meeting with the Tutor General/Permanent Secretary, Mr C A. Olajide, who formally sent us a list of 15 shortlisted students from various schools within the Mainland for further interview.
We scaled down the number to 10 after visiting the students and parents at their homes to establish their peculiar situations and obtain justification for financial help.
Each student was called to obtain their home addresses and we agreed on the most convenient time to meet with them and their parents. The visits were scheduled and the interview was carried out accordingly.
Below was the outcome of the two-week exercise:
Findings Sequel to Visits to the Homes of Potential Beneficiaries of Goff Education Award
1. Anuoluwapo Isiba
We met her and her cousin in the church.
She’s 16years, in SS2 and a Science student.
Her dad is late and her mum is mentally challenged so the cousin is responsible for her upkeep.
From our discussion, she is a brilliant girl whose desire is to study medicine. Her best subjects are Biology and Mathematics.
The assistance will go a long way to relieve the cousin who have taken the sole responsibility of caring for her.
2. Nofisat Raji
We met her and her dad at the Granny’s place in Oyingbo.
She is 15years old, in SS2 and a science student.
She cuts across as an intelligent girl and has received an award from the school during her JSS3 period. She has a brother who is enjoying a scholarship scheme. She stays with the granny and do have time for personal study.
She should be given the opportunity.
3. Ajayi Moyinoluwa
We met with her and the dad at the Church premises.
She’s 15 years, SS2 and an Art student. She wants to be a lawyer.
She is the third and last born of the family. The mum is a petty trader and the father a contractor.
She should also be consider for the available opportunity.
4. Babajide Halimat
We met her and dad in their one room at Iwaya.
She is 14years, in SS1 and an Art student.
Her mum is late and a struggling dad who looks forward to a better life for her daughter.
She is brilliant and outspoken. She is deserving of the opportunity too.
5. Otukoya Hassanat:
She seem to be a very bright student who is also industrious. She is not only into her studies but also into fashion designing and tailoring with her mum.
Her mum is a tailor and she assists her mum when she is free. The mum stated that “she allows Hassanat to study whenever she has exams”.
From our conversation with the mum and Hassanat, they seem to be so respectful and promising.
We believe Hassanat is deserving of the opportunity, because it would relieve the mum of the stress financially. She is a single mum.
6. Abiodun Sunday
We also met these people at Bariga. The aunt explained to us why he stays with his grandma. She emphasized that he has been a very bright student.
Abiodun would need the support because the aunt and husband may not seem to support him fully. She even hope for his school to be changed. The aunt is a petty trader and it seem to be that she is really trying her best to help raise the child.
On her reason for the resolution made for Abiodun stay with Grandma. She said the husband and her had taken a decision not to allow anyone stay with them. She is only trying her best to help him.
He loves football and his best subject is maths. We totally understand that a child his age would do what the boys do (his aunt says, he is playful) but here is my submission.
If a playful child is doing excellently in his studies. How much more when he decides to focus. He will do more.
7. Quadri Faruk
He was in school when we arrived. His mum cried bitterly for her late son who she thought would be the one to save her from her struggles and assist Faruk and his sister through school.
She said she invested a lot on her late first son who also did excellently, finished his ICAN, got a job and later died in his prime.
She lamented on the pain of going through the same struggles on Faruk and the sister. She is a widow and she is really deserving of the help. This would bring much relieve.
8. Abakpa Samuel
Samuel lives with his dad and sister in a room and parlour apartment at Markudi Street. The boy is bright and based on assessment, he has great prospects academically. He’s aspiring to an Aeronautical Engineering. Samuel’s dad Mr Agbapa was welcoming and looked forward to having us give his son the award as this will help alleviate their current financial situation.
9. Lawal Fuad
Fuad and parents live in a dilapidated build, in fact the house has been marked distressed.
Lawal lives with his Dad, we didn’t see the mom, however, we met one of his siblings. Lawal is one of the brightest in his class, he affirmed same and vows not to give up his quest for academic excellence. We confirmed that he’s in Art department.
N.B : Report on the 10th student was pending at the time of publication and will be added soon.
The students will resume into either SS2 or SS3 from September 2021. We would offer each student a sum of One Hundred Thousand Naira (N100,000.00) per academic session. This money would be paid directly to their respective schools to augment their tuition fees, books, etc and handover the residual to the parents where applicable.
